Here’s an interesting one: suppose you want to search for Web pages that contain
a specific image file. All you have to do is use AltaVista’s image: operator
followed by the image’s full file name. For example, if you’re looking for pages
that contain a flower.jpg file you enter image:flower.jpg.
Search for Pages That Include a Specific Applet or Object
Along the same lines, you can search for pages that include a specific Java
applet or those that contain an object created in another program. To search for
Java applets, use the applet: operator. To search for other objects (such as Flash
animations), use the object: operator.
Search for Pages That Link to a Given Page
Maybe you want to find pages that link to a given page—figuring, perhaps correctly,
that these linked pages might contain similarly useful information. In this
instance, you use the link: operator, followed by the first page’s URL. So, for
example, if you want to see all the pages that link to IBM’s home page, you’d
enter link:www.ibm.com.
Speed Up Your Search with AltaVista Shortcuts
AltaVista provides a number of shortcuts you can use to go directly to certain
types of results. For example, if you enter maps, AltaVista displays a form in
which you can enter the city you want to map; if you enter map of san francisco,
AltaVista skips the form and goes directly to a map of San Francisco.
