Conversation and comments are common place on the Web.
The DIALOG element allows you to identify conversation on a
screen. There are three main parts to the DIALOG element:
• The wrapping DIALOG element that identifies a conversation.
• A DT element that identifies the speaker.
• A DD element that identifies the conversation.
Using the DIALOG element to block conversation can look as
follows.
<DIALOG>

Josie Smith

HTML5 is a great way to block semantic elements on
a page.

Ian Jones

Yes, you are absolutely right.

Josie Smith

Conversation can now be easily identified.

Ian Jones

Blocking allows you to accomplish several things
such as:

Clearly identifying blocks of content on a page

Making it easier to construct page designs

</DIALOG>

Opening and closing the conversation is the main DIALOG
element. Each new conversation starts with a DT element that
identifies the speaker. For instance, Ian Jones is identified using
the following DT element:

Ian Jones

Ian’s conversation is then wrapped between a DD element.
Here is a close-up example.

Blocking allows you to accomplish several things
such as:

Clearly identifying blocks of content on a page

Making it easier to construct page designs

You can see that additional HTML elements can be placed
within the DD DIALOG element such as list, paragraph, or even
an article.
HTML5 introduces new elements to allow you to control
your code. Broadly, the new elements cover these main
functions:
• Blocking of content on the page
• Media management
• Form structure
The blocking of content in HTML is traditionally accomplished
using either complex tables or the infamous DIV element.
HTML5 introduces several new elements that allow you to
easily insert blocks of content into the page. Conveniently, these
new elements have names that identify what the block of content
accomplishes:
• HEADER
• SECTION
• ARTICLE
• ASIDE
• FOOTER
• NAV
The role of the new page layout elements is to better
describe specific parts of a document. Think of the new tags as
behaving in a similar way to how you approach writing a document
in Microsoft Word. A typical Word document is built up of
sections of content that can be separated in paragraphs, sidebars,
and header and footer sections. The new blocking elements
in HTML5 approach HTML code in logical sections, or
blocks.
The FORM element, in HTML5, has also received its first major
upgrade since HTML2, back in 1994. Forms 2.0, as it is sometimes
referred to, enables you to add the following visual effects to form
fields:
• Format the form for adding only telephone numbers.
• Allow a form field that is picking a web address to validate it
against the client browser history.
• Format a field to only accept valid email addresses.
• Enable a field to pick from a calendar to choose a date.
• Force a field to be the first default field in the form.
• Highlight fields that are required.
With Forms 2.0, the rich functionality you need in a form is
built directly into HTML—there is no need for Ajax, Flash, or any
other technology

Georgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02539353359507331828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4331506491982501425.post-24798667715900570522012-05-21T06:53:00.000-07:002012-05-21T06:53:29.788-07:00What Is Included in HTML5

Unlike earlier improvements to HTML, the new HTML5 specifications
are taking a much broader look at what is needed to
support web site development and programming for the next
decade and beyond. HTML5 can effectively be broken down into
the following segments:
• Core page structure
• Visual presentation
• Graphical tools
• Rich media support
• Enhancements to JavaScript
The structure of this book follows these five distinct categories for
HTML5.

Georgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02539353359507331828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4331506491982501425.post-60024408940221835192012-05-21T06:49:00.002-07:002012-05-21T06:49:28.398-07:00Web 2.0 Applications and Solutions

The challenge with today’s Web is that it is not the same
place created in the 1990s. The W3C tried addressing the evolution
of the HTML standard with a new, updated standard called
XHTML 2.0. The contributing vendors did not warmly accept
the technology standard and a subsequent standard, HTML5,
developed by the Web Hypertext Application Technology
Working Group (WHATWG), is now in active development. The
result is XHTML 2.0 has died on the vine, and all of the major
technology companies, including Microsoft, are pledging to
support HTML5.
Overall, all web browsers have adopted the HTML4 standard.
Web site development can now be easily accomplished
using tools such as Adobe’s Dreamweaver and Microsoft’s
Expression Web. But, it has taken a decade to get here.
Arguably, Microsoft is the company that has been the weakest
in supporting Web HTML standards with their Internet
Explorer. It is only with the release of Internet Explorer 8 that
Microsoft was compliant with HTML4—a full 12 years after the
standard was published.
New web browsers (Apple’s Safari, Opera Web Browser,
Google’s Chrome, and Mozilla’s FireFox) and new Web-enabled
devices (Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android, Palm’s Pre, and RIM’s
BlackBerry) are pushing what can be done on the Web. Each of
these competitive companies agrees on one thing: HTML5 is the
next standard, and they are already supporting it.
I have heard people to say which one is more better to have a Blog or a website? Well in my sense both ways got its own potential.HOW ? Well Blog is about writing and stick to it for long time and showing people about your interest and making them come to you and subscribe with what you are doing.Blog have to be nicely organised have to have good and interesting posts and must have a consistency on the work.Blogging is fun make a topic on your mind and write about it rather then thinking about money. If you think about money before your Blog becomes old and have at least couple of hundreds subscribers you wont earn a dime.So first focus for Bloging should be driving traffic and getting subscribers when you will see you are getting the traffic you want or at least it showing to you that you are started to build a good traffic constantly for a while then you can go for thinking money not before that.Best way for Blogging is post frequently and stick to it. At least for a year.
Here are some tips to get traffic in Blog.

1. Target traffic first.
2.Work hard.
3.Find good and interesting topics to write your blog.
4.Do a research.
5. Target some keywords and write on them.
6.Do not copyright or do it less as less as possible.
7.Do not just write ad pictures and make it more presentable.
8.Try to get the experience of your visitors of your Blog.
9.Try to make good questions and post them where visitors will see and answer.
10.Build quality links.

Well these points you have to do first for Blogging or a website you build for at least first year and get the eye of traffic. when you get enough visitors then think how to use them to earn money not before that and mos important thing is do not get upset be motivated to what you are doing.

Same things are referenced for website swell but in a different sense why in different because for making a website you have to learn coding.Coding is Html,Java,Php,Css or algorithm if you want something more Or you can hire some one who knows about it.If you don't have at least basic sense about coding you wont be able to upgrade your website swell that's the only point which makes website and Blogging become different from on to another.
You can set up a blog in couple of minutes from Google Blogger or WordPress and start posting but for the website you need a hosting account and a domain name but Blogging can be done without any money but both takes same amount of time to establish.
Websites got some thing more to do like search a domain name which suits your website topic such as like for a Handy man website if you take name like techcrunch it wont match with your website and it wont make a good impression on the search engine swell cause it will get confused. So know what you are doing and think and do a research on it see how others doing gather experience and then start it do not just get a domain and start. That is a mistake i have done at the beginning but learned from it.

Hackers are individuals who likes to learn the core of programming.Hacking is a art of modifying programs and finding the loop holes of a program to make it more secure for the users.
We know hacking is related to the computer but it can be done any where in the cyber or in real world.Breaking a locked rooms lock is also hacking.Hacking is widely used to make a thing or a computer program more user friendly and more safe for the users.
The OS (Operating system) we know as windows in short terms also hacked several times by professional hackers to improve its vulnerability and to find new ways to improve its experience.

Hackers are prose, ultimate skilled people, who are the experts of all fields of computing and technology.Their are certain skills a hacker have those are

.they have high knowledge of programming, reverse engineering of a program, hardware, networking, and a lot more.

.Hackers are artistic individuals who does it for money, adventure and in professional sector retwiking things.

.They are able to think with defense and also bear a offense in mind.

Most OS who are related to web designing knows that for doing so we need knowledge in HTML,java,c++,Perl,Vb,c#,net, SQL, MYSQL,Oracle and many more. But hackers learn this Languages to become experts who knows ins and outs of this languages.
Some times hackers sometimes categorized by their attitude as well as their skill level too.A professional hacker is the person who hack things ethically. They get agreement signed by the owner of a organization or a individual to hack. This kind of hackers are used for making things right and more strong.
They hack a security program to make it more competitive and to provide more safety to the users.
Hackers are widely chosen in a IT company for a highly paid job so we must not think hackers are all ways the bad individuals.

Well,On the other hand malicious hackers are also highly skilled like the professional hackers but they use their skills to hack into a program to gather sensitive information and to target money. And also to penetrate people.
This kind of hacking often known as black hat hackers and on the other hand professionals are know as white hat hackers.

Their is another hacker swell rather then white hat and black hat they are called grey hat hackers they hack in to a computer by the help of web and notify the user that their computer is hacked and offer them repair in order to earn some money. The difference between white hat and black hat and the grey hat is white hats are professionals works for a organization,
black hats are uses their skills to penetrate people and grey hats uses their skills for earning money without any shadow of a arrogation but they do not annoy anyone while doing so.
A mobile app typically performs a single task, or multiple tasks within a
defined set. Apps can display others’ ads alongside more functional content,
thus enabling a merchant to realize additional revenue within the
app. Merchants can also use more convenient, consumer-friendly “in-app”
promotions or sales.
Typically, merchants promote their apps from their mobile website
because it convinces the customer to put that icon on the home screen
of his mobile device. For example, eBay creates apps tailored to attract and
retain new customers who otherwise wouldn’t visit the website. The
presence of the brand there is a huge win for the merchant, since it’s a
constant visual reminder of the services the merchant offers.
You should also promote the mobile website that supports
the app. That way you can use the app to attract
consumers and convert them into repeat customers for
your mobile website.
Toward that end, make it easy and worthwhile for
app users to access your mobile website and get more
information and services or make a purchase. For that
matter, you can design an app especially for purchases
via a mobile device.
Georgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02539353359507331828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4331506491982501425.post-27091073444313039872012-04-15T09:18:00.001-07:002012-04-16T09:18:05.360-07:00selling via Mobile Apps

In many consumers’ minds, mobile shopping is all about the apps. Finding
and downloading the latest popular apps and—better still for merchants
who offer them—sharing the apps with friends makes this e-shopping for
physical and digital goods highly appealing for buyers.
You can market your mobile website via a mobile app that suits any number
of mobile device manufacturers. The biggest market for mobile apps
today is Apple’s iPhone and iPad. Google Android and RIM BlackBerry
phones also offer scalable selling opportunities with apps.
Most apps are available via an app store, such as Apple’s App Store or the
Android Market. Consumers access such digital catalogs directly from a
mobile device. Of course, some providers, like Apple, Google Android and
BlackBerry RIM, allow their customers to locate apps online via a PC and
synchronize the content with a smartphone.
Apps are highly popular with mobile consumers because they are inexpensive
(and often free), easy, quick, and highly varied shopping tools.

Some downloaded apps, however, have a short shelf life of just a month
or so, while others may be quickly mothballed—or worse, never opened—
by A users.

Still, Nielsen Research reports that the average consumer today has 10
to 40 apps installed on his phone. While that total is expanding exponentially,
there’s still design time, consumer interest, and marketing
opportunity to launch your own mobile shopping app. That window
of opportunity, we must remind you, remains open only as long as you
maintain a compelling, updated, and relevant app.
Georgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02539353359507331828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4331506491982501425.post-4340465769249147042012-04-15T09:13:00.003-07:002012-04-15T09:13:32.718-07:00Online to Mobile Website

It’s a major step to embrace mobile commerce and build a version of your
online website specifically for mobile devices. In addition to many new
sales strategies to adapt for the medium, web design and functionality
also need to be streamlined for mobile customers because it’s more difficult
to navigate a website on a phone than on a computer.
To that end, you’ll need to develop a mobile version of your website that
meets various mobile-friendly consumer needs, including mastering
some of the following basics.
Georgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02539353359507331828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4331506491982501425.post-81839765664591203612012-04-15T09:11:00.000-07:002012-04-15T09:11:01.707-07:00M commerce, Ecommerce, and Retail: Merging as One

You’ll learn throughout this book about your newest customer: the “omnipresent
customer,” the one who shops multiple channels to perform a
single transaction.
Forrester Research reports that 25 percent of shoppers use a mobile phone
while in a store to competitively price-shop an item. That means your
item on the shelf is now being considered with many others just like
it—and maybe at a better price—on the customer’s mobile phone. One
prominent UK retailer estimates it loses 12 percent of its in-store sales to
shoppers who buy elsewhere on mobile websites while in the store.
Further, new research by Nielsen and Yahoo found that 9 out of 10 mobile
website users have logged on while in a store, and just over half of all
in-store mobile research has led to a purchase. That means mobile shoppers
accessing their smartphones while in a store are busy doing mobile
website price comparisons, researching product and service reviews, and
text friends for gift ideas, among other buying decisions.

For you, the store owner who also has a mobile website or app, this mobile
consumer behavior gives you an expanded opportunity to market and
sell directly to your visitors. According to research from Insight Express, up
to 35 percent of smartphone users look for a store coupon pushed to their
phone while another 33 percent search product inventory when in a store.
You can focus the design of your new mobile website or app to help in store
shoppers with more immediate information about the store for their
per-shopping tasks, send real-time e-coupons, text them special deals, or
even provide functions like scanning a bar code to get a price.
Therefore, your challenge as a marketer today adds up in this new sales
equation: M Commerce plus eCommerce plus retail equals one simultaneous
shopping experience for your prospective customer.
Georgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02539353359507331828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4331506491982501425.post-89559651839401573562012-04-15T09:05:00.003-07:002012-04-20T14:03:21.473-07:00Mobile Landscape (Mobile business landscape)

While some merchants may equate complexity with scalability in building
a mobile business, the most reliable mobile sales generally come to
those who create an easy, user-friendly, successful shopping experience
that reinforces brand loyalty across all possible venues. Convenience
drives consumer adoption of your mobile offerings.
Georgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02539353359507331828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4331506491982501425.post-49623114009374454982012-04-15T09:02:00.002-07:002012-04-15T09:02:35.488-07:00Mobile commerce now a days

According to ABI Research, U.S. M Commerce in 2011 will reach $5 billion
in sales and account for almost 2 percent of total eCommerce. And many
merchants expect greater than 2 percent of their eCommerce sales will
come from mobile in the near future.
That’s a fast track. And with mobile sales projected to hit $163 billion, or
nearly 12 percent of all global eCommerce, by 2015, your business has
more opportunities than ever to profit from mobile payments.

Where it might go in the future?

It seems that there are as many opinions on the current direction of the
mobile market as there are merchants. To be brief, let’s cite one major
mobile market trend called “location-based shopping” in the synthesis of
consumer behavior, technology, and payments.
In this approach, customers use their web-enabled smartphones while
shopping in physical stores to look up price comparisons and read shopper
reviews online before deciding to buy in-store items.
This means that merchants may now develop a mobile website or app to
help customers make more informed point-of-sale choices and profit by
sharing various real-time promotions with them.
In support of this consumer interest, key emerging technology involves
mobile phones with embedded microchips that can facilitate local, in store
“contact less payments.” Essentially, once a customer decides to buy
an item in the store, she can also pay for it with her smartphone at the
physical store checkout.
While the potential for mobile contact less payments is huge, to develop
this capacity, such chips must be embedded in a wide range of mobile
handsets, and merchants must have readers installed at the point of sale
on a wide scale.
That, of course, is part of the biggest mobile market challenge today, as
there remains much open debate on the matters and means of such technology
adoption.
Of course, payment processors like PayPal Mobile must also provide relevant
tools and keep pace with trends for the entire mobile market system
of consumers, technology, and payments to work. And consumers must
see the ongoing value and dependability of mobile shopping.

Although the mobile payments field is still in its infancy, industry projections
for its rapid growth have gained great attention from a wide range
of influential consumers, manufacturers, carriers, content providers,
press, industry analysts, and, of course, merchants like you.
Many merchants are beginning to invest heavily in mCommerce infrastructure,
and many are building mobile-enabled websites and apps.
According to Forrester Research, 75 percent of retailers now have strategic
plans to engage consumers in the mobile space.
If you’re an eCommerce merchant or new app developer who wants to
migrate significant aspects of your business to a mobile website or create
a custom app, we’ll show you how to integrate your business and be paid
through a broader range of customers and venues on multiple mobile
platforms, browsers, and devices.
We’ll also share specific mobile payments advice that will be valuable if
you already run a mobile website and like to learn new sales techniques,
own a physical store and want to maximize mobile for in-store sales, or
sell products and services to other merchants.
Georgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02539353359507331828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4331506491982501425.post-46746386813644192702012-04-15T08:44:00.001-07:002012-04-15T08:44:21.488-07:00PHP Data Objects

PDO (PHP Data Objects) is a native data-access abstraction library that ships with PHP 5.1
and is offered as a PECL extension for PHP 5.0. (PECL is a repository of PHP extensions,
located at http://pecl.php.net/.) The official PDO manual, together with installation
instructions (which can also be found in Appendix A), is available at http://php.net/pdo.
PDO offers a uniform way to access a variety of data sources. Using PDO increases your
application’s portability and flexibility because if the backend database changes, the effects
on your data access code are kept to a minimum (in many cases, all that needs to change is
the connection string for the new database).
After you become familiar with the PDO data-access abstraction layer, you can use the
same programming techniques on other projects that might require a different database
solution.
Georgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02539353359507331828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4331506491982501425.post-89492210172285323602012-04-15T08:39:00.000-07:002012-04-15T08:39:34.568-07:00what is postgreSQL

Many RDBMSs are available for you to use with PHP, including PostgreSQL, MySQL,
Oracle, and so on. PostgreSQL is arguably the world’s most advanced open source database,
and it’s a free, fast, and reliable database. Another important advantage is that many web hosting
providers offer access to a PostgreSQL database, which makes your life easier when going
live with your newly created e-commerce web site. We’ll use PostgreSQL as the back end database
when developing the e-commerce web site.
The language used to communicate with a relational database is SQL (Structured Query
Language). However, each database engine recognizes a particular dialect of this language. If
you decide to use a different RDBMS than PostgreSQL, you’ll probably need to update some of
the SQL queries.
Georgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02539353359507331828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4331506491982501425.post-671569400331759712012-04-09T11:47:00.001-07:002012-04-09T11:47:49.056-07:00Scams

SQL Server is Microsoft’s high-end client-server database. To load the Lyric Music database into
SQL Server, do the following:
❍ Launch the SQL Server Query Analyzer and log in using the master sa (system administrator)
login or a login provided to you by your database administrator.
❍ From the menu select File | Open. With the book’s CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive,
browse to your CD-ROM drive and select LyricSQLServer.sql.
❍ If you do not have rights to create a database, delete the first four lines of the script file that
is loaded.
❍ From the menu select Query | Execute to run the script and create the Lyric Music database.
To practice your SQL, do the following:
❍ Launch the SQL Server Query Analyzer and login using the master sa login or a login
provided to you by your database administrator.
❍ Type the SQL command in the upper pane.
❍ Run the SQL by selecting Query | Execute from the menu or by clicking the green triangle
icon in the toolbar. The results will appear in the lower pane.
Data description commands:
❍ To list all user tables in your SQL Server database type: select name from sysobjects where
type = ‘U’
❍ To list all fields, data types, and related information for a particular table type: exec sp_help
tablename;
MySQL
MySQL is a free client-server database that can be downloaded from http://www.mysql.com.
MySQL is used in many websites, especially web sites hosted on Linux servers. However, it also
runs under Windows. To load the Lyric Music database, do the following:
❍ Go to a command prompt (Start | All Programs | Accessories Command Prompt depending
on your version of Windows).
❍ Once at a command prompt you will probably need to change to the directory in which
your MySQL programs are installed. Under Windows that is normally done with:
cd\mysql\bin
❍ Place the book’s CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive, then type:
mysql mysql < d:LyricMySQL.sql. Replace the d: with the letter of your CD-ROM drive.
To practice your SQL, do the following:
❍ Launch MySQLManager (You will find this in the /mysql/bin folder. It would be a good idea
to create a shortcut on your desktop or in your Start menu. This program is where you can
enter SQL.)
❍ From the drop-down menu select Tools | SQL Query
❍ Click the yellow cylinder database icon to view a list of your databases. Select Lyric
❍ Click on the Query tab and type Use followed by the name of your Lyric Music database
(i.e., Use Lyric).
❍ Click the green triangle run icon. The display will switch to the Results tab, but not show
any results.
❍ Click back on the Query tab and type your SQL command. Use the green triangle run icon
to view your results.
Data description commands:
❍ To list all user tables in your Oracle database type: show tables
❍ To list all fields and data types in a particular table type: describe tablename
Microsoft Access is part of Microsoft Office. It is a competent database system for personal use
and small workgroups of as many as 25 users. Access also works adequately as a database backend
for low traffic database-driven web sites.
If you have Microsoft Access 97 or higher, you can enter SQL commands directly in Access.
Copy lyric2k.mdb (Access 2000 or higher) or lyric97.mdb (Access 97) from the CD-ROM. You
may need to un-check the file’s read-only property. Launch it in Access, and convert it if necessary.
Then do the following:

Access 97 Access 2000+
❍ Click on Queries ❍ Click on Queries
❍ Click on New ❍ Double-click on “Create query in Design view”
❍ Click on Design View and OK ❍ In the Show Tables dialog, click Close
❍ In the Show Tables dialog, click Close ❍ Click on the SQL button in the toolbar
❍ Click on the SQL button in the toolbar

Data description commands:
❍ In Access you do not use SQL commands to view the tables and table information. To view
the tables, go to the Tables tab of the database window. To view the information on any
table, highlight that table and click on the Design button.
While hierarchical and network database systems still exist and while new, non-relational data
concepts (such as Extensible Markup Language, XML, and object-oriented programming, OOP)
have arisen, the relational database is still king, and SQL is the language of choice for relational
data. In fact, SQL is being enlarged to include XML. Microsoft’s SQL Server 2000 includes
extensions to SQL called SQLXML to create XML views of relational data. Oracle9i Release 2
has fully incorporated the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) XML data model into its
DBMS and provides access methods for navigating and querying XML. So there is every indication
that relational databases and SQL will remain important tools in the future.
Database administrators and back-end developers use SQL as a stand-alone language to
create and maintain databases. SQL is also used by front-end application programmers as a set of
embedded commands for database connectivity. This is standard practice in both client-server
programming and many kinds of web programming, including ASP, PHP, JSP, Java, and other
environments. SQL is everywhere.
SQL is an important skill even for non-programmers. Many managers face the demands of
querying a corporate database to get vital information. Though many kinds of user interfaces
have been developed for that task, nearly all of them use either SQL concepts or SQL syntax.
Most DBMSs meet SQL89 standards, and many meet SQL92 standards. So to a large extent,
SQL written for one DBMS will work in another DBMS with little or no changes. However,
every DBMS vendor wants to differentiate its product on the market with more powerful
features. In addition, the SQL standard does not define some things that programmers often
want to do with data, thus leaving a gap in functionality that each vendor must fill. Finally, for
whatever reason, DBMS vendors often digress from the SQL standard in both minor and major
ways.
Every implementation of SQL is at least a little different. Throughout this book, we will
stick as close to ANSI-SQL as possible and note differences among the various DBMS products.
Chapter 5 lists many of the SQL extensions added by various vendors. Many of these are quite
useful. In addition, many of the SQL extensions provide faster performance than ANSI-SQL
because they are optimized for a particular DBMS.
However, programmers should approach DBMS-specific extensions to SQL with caution.
Suppose you are writing a database-driven web application. You shop around for a web-hosting
company and find one you like that offers SQL Server as the back-end database. A year later that
web-hosting company goes out of business and you switch to a hosting company that does not
offer SQL Server but does offer MySQL for database connectivity. The more you have relied
upon SQL Server–specific functions in your code, the more work you are going to have to do to
get your application running on the new host.
On the other hand, suppose your company purchases Oracle to use as the back-end database
for a company intranet. It is likely they will keep Oracle as their database forever, so if you can
wring more performance from your code by using Oracle-specific functions, it may very well be
worth it.
To understand the present impact of
SQL, it helps to understand how it came about.
Remember, the idea behind relational databases was that the database management system
(DBMS) would itself keep track of all table relationships independent of hardware or outside
programming languages. Thus a language to query data from multiple tables could be much
more high level and easy to use. Dr. E.F. Codd, the IBM researcher described such a language,
calling it Structured English QUEry Language (or SEQUEL). Later the name was shortened to
just Structured Query Language (SQL).
Codd’s ideas quickly caught on. Several companies began working on DBMSs to implement
the relational concept. The first systems to hit the market in the late 1970s were Oracle, Relational
Technology’s Ingres, and IBM’s System/R. All of them used a version of SQL to manipulate
the data and database structures. With IBM’s market dominance, SQL quickly caught on
and IBM’s version of SQL became the de facto standard.

The computer industry saw a need to bring all the versions of SQL together into a standard
that everyone could adopt. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), one of the major
standards bodies in the United States representing 1,000 companies, organizations, and government
agencies, headed up this effort. The first SQL standard (called SQL89) was released in
1989. The SQL specification has since been revised twice with SQL92 (in 1992) and SQL99 (in
1999).
One advantage of SQL being an open standard is that SQL programmers can transport their
skill to any DBMS. Also, it allows specific databases to be ported to other DBMSs with only
minor changes to the SQL code.
